Arran Mitchell Photography

Arran Mitchell [BSc, MSc] started taking pictures almost 28 years ago at the age of 14 when his father, also a photographer gave him his first camera. Unlike most novice photographers, Arran started off by using Yashica 6cm x 6cm medium format camera with no auto-focus and no built-in exposure meter.

Since then Arran was trained in photography in the Royal Air Force and has been talking pictures in many places around the world as a photographer on cruise-liners to being a stills photographer for film and TV. The one thing that most of his work has in common is that it has involved photographing people. Having firmly established himself as a social photographer Arran continues to work mainly in the field of wedding photography, utilising the skills and techniques gained in previous photographic assignments. By his own admission he would say that his style is more photo-journalistic preferring to let the story unfold as the day progresses but taking some control in order to get the best possible pictures of the day.

“My philosophy is simple: get the pictures that tell the whole story from start to finish in the most stylish fashion possible. Throughout the day I am constantly looking for images that will ultimately end up ‘in the album’. As a photographer, I see it as vitally important to be as flexible and possible and be able to respond technically and emotionally to any situation. I really enjoy taking pictures at weddings because the people arrive in the right frame of mind and are there to have a good time. It is a joyous day and this can be seen by the smiles and expressions on the people’s faces, which in my experience translates into great pictures. Taking pictures of happy people, usually on sunny days and in great locations is what makes me think it’s the best job in the world.”
